Our sneak preview of the most exciting cars coming in the next few years draws on knowledge from leaked product-development plans, spy photos, and loose-lipped insiders mixed in with information that has already been officially released. The reporting for this story was completed in February and early March, before the auto industry began feeling major effects of the coronavirus pandemic. As many automakers are now delaying or pausing development programs, the debut and on-sale dates reported here may change.
Mazda's recent upmarket ambitions had us worried. The mid-luxury market stopped being friendly about 40 years ago. How's Oldsmobile doing these days? But just when we thought Mazda had truly lost the plot, the company looks ready to redeem itself.
Most automakers competing in the middle ground dress up mainstream mechanical bits in browner leather and offer sheetmetal shaped by a more pretentious designer. Bucking that trend, Mazda plans to adopt the blueprint of a full luxury model and hang a lower price on it.
The next-generation 6, which should be on sale by the end ofis set to get a full Bavarian, transitioning to a longitudinal-engine platform with rear-wheel drive and an inline-six. That engine won't just be a new layout for Mazda. It will incorporate the company's Skyactiv-X sort-of-compression-ignition gasoline technology as well as a volt hybrid system. We've seen numbers approaching horsepower thrown around. With Toyota's budget, Mazda engineers could probably welcome Elon Musk to Mars with a locally sourced shrimp buffet.
You already have a pretty good idea of what this car will look like. Reflect on Mazda's Vision Coupe concept, which debuted at the Tokyo auto show. That long-hood, short-deck showpiece was clearly projecting rear-drive intent, cloaked in an evolution of Mazda's seductive styling language with softened lines and subtler forms.
There's even a chance that Mazda will mimic Lexus and put the inline-six into both four- and two-door bodies.
Rewind two years prior to the Vision Coupe and you get the RX-Vision, a Mazda sports-car concept with a hood way longer than necessary for the Wankel rotary the company was imagining at the time. Few things cement an upmarket image better than a rear-drive sports coupe.

Join the Conversation Show Comments LoadingIn keeping with its premium aspirations, Mazda is about to completely revamp its Mazda 6 mid-size sedan. We've long known the automaker is working on a new inline-six engine for a longitudinal, rear-drive car layout, and a new report from Car and Driver suggests the next Mazda 6 will be the first to get it.
For those unfamiliar with the current 6here's why that's such a big deal:. Since its introduction to the U. We should point out the first-generation Mazdaspeed 6 that was modified to accept an all-wheel-drive system as the lone exception to the front-drive 6 rule.
To move to a longitudinal, rear-drive-based layout for the 6—a setup more common in the entry-luxury space that includes BMW 's 3-series and Mercedes-Benz 's C-Class, Mazda will be starting entirely from scratch. This new "Large Architecture," first confirmed in a Mazda public financial report last year, would presumably also be shared with the CX-9 three-row crossover, which is currently built on the same platform as the 6.
The Mazda 6 is the older of the two products, so it makes sense that it would be the first to get the new architecture. Currently, the only other rear-drive product in Mazda's U.
There will also be a diesel version of that engine, and the platform will support volt mild hybrid and full-on plug-in hybrid tech. Rear-wheel drive was implied only by the fact that the engine would sit longitudinally in the engine bay, but the only option confirmed for the new platform is i-Activ all-wheel drive.
The Next Mazda 6 Is Going Full BMW, With a Straight-Six Engine and RWD
Have there been longitudinal engine, front-drive vehicles in the past? Yes, but they're rare. A patent filing unearthed this year revealed a few more details about the new straight-six. Mazda's new six-cylinder will apparently be relatively compact the engine type tends to be substantial in length and will also have the ability to vary the size of its exhaust ports.
A patent for a longitudinal eight-speed automatic transmission was also found, which would mark an upgrade over Mazda's current six-speeds-maximum transmission lineup.
Timing for the next-gen Mazda 6 is murky, especially with the current global health crisis slowing everything down, but the new rear-drive-based sedan could arrive by What is perhaps more exciting is what this platform means for a potential rear-drive coupe. The Mazda RX-Vision and Vision Coupe concepts from a few years ago strongly implied a RWD layout, and their long hoods would be well suited for covering a straight-six, possibly with twin-turbo or performance hybrid assistance.

It needs to be a bit roomier IMO. Beast meaning stronger than what it is now. It does have to grow just a little bit IMO. I hope Mazda goes with their plans for Mazda 6, sounds interesting. I just wonder how much of a market will be for such sedans today.
I think this will be a global platform that will be used to expand their CUV family and hopefully get the proper room inside for everyone as even the CX9 CUV is just cramped for the size and needs a proper powerful motor.
Be interesting to watch and see. Something different and unique that will stand out in the market instead of another appliance family sedan. They have held their value well.
Pontiac G8 GT's held their value well for quite a long time as well. I can understand what you are saying, great that they are holding their value. Sadly, I tried and while I like station wagaons, grew up in an Oldsmobile Delta 98 Station Wagon, Blue with fake wood on the side and the third seat in the back facing backwards, that was my spot, sisters in the middle bench, I cannot fit in the CTS-V Wagon.
Cool Cars, but not big enough for me to fit. Hopefully one day you get the auto you love. Well, the SS was a very low volume niche model And it's not a FWD generic. But that's a high price compared to a i or V8 E-class of the same era and mileage though those had a higher new price and more sales volume. You can post now and register later.
