We've been using the bike for commuting and some day trips. Here's how she's currently spec'd out It was loud and sorta ugly. I couldn't be happier with this setup Here are the links to the mods we did We wanted something that would really clean up the rear fender of the bike and we also wanted to get rid of the big front turn signals.

Since we wanted to add handguards to the bike right off the bat, we went with our Zeta Armor Handguard Package with built-in turn signals. This really cleans up the front of the bike.

We disabled the integrated turn signal feature of that tail light and used DRC Type LED turn signals which are bolted up to the side of the tail light. These simple changes make the bike look WAY better!! We decided to add a pair of DRC Wide footpegswhich have a wider step width than the stock pegs, making them more comfortable and grippier too. Already discussed above, the Zeta Armor Handguards with built-in turn signals look great and eliminate the big ugly stock front turn signals.

Every DRZ is sold new with restrictions to meet noise and environmental requirements in each country. The DRZE is the least restricted, but can't be registered for road use in some areas as a result, especially California.

Let's start with the airbox and carburetor. If you are after cheap mods, the one below will work fine with the Mikuni. The Mikuni carburetor is tuned to run extremely lean in order to meet tough environmental standards. Opening up your airbox and rejetting will be the cheapest best modification to give your DRZ more power.

Take the seat off your DRZ, then remove the snorkel on your airbox. Enlarge the air intake to 3 inches by 3 inches hence the '3x3 mod' name!

This mod can't be done alone; you also need to rejet the carburetor. There are aftermarket jetting kits available, and forums like Thumpertalk have plenty of riders discussing the pros and cons of these. You can simply make your Mikuni run richer which will give you more horsepower, but the many aftermarket jetting kits will work better and cost very little for more power.

If you are doing your mods cheaply, you just need to change the stock jets. Change these to a main jet and It's heavy but the standard exhaust is very quiet and not as restrictive as some factory systems.

The DRZE comes with a removeable end cap. We are strong believers in not annoying the shit out of everyone and would suggest living with the standard pipe you ride in public. You can lash out on Yoshimura pipes and many others but you can't getting that much more power for the money you are spending. You might want to just put the money into a KTM!

Believe it or not, performance pipes usually don't give you much extra horsepower - we've seen the dyno charts on the DRZ. The huge increases some riders predict are actually more psychological than anything - if it sounds loud it must be faster, right?! Remember though, the DRZ has two piece valves and aggressive cams can place undue stress on these, so it might not be worth the slight power increase for possible damage to your DRZ head.

The DRZE also has a higher compression ratio Remember though, you won't be using low octane fuel any more if you up the compression! You can take the DRZ out to cc with a big bore kit, or even around cc with a stroke kit too. These will give the DRZ more power when done properly, but again is it worth the money?

It is usually just better putting that extra money into a bike designed properly from the ground up for performance. As a case in point, we've ridden a DRZSM with a few thousand dollers in mods; it was bored out to cc, a racing carburetor, full Yoshimura system, 3x3 mods, valve grinds, 3x3 mods, and finished with a dyno tune to make it all work together.

Yes, it was faster, but we were surprised that it wasn't much faster than a DRZE with just the 3x3 mods and nothing else! On top of that, a WRF motard still pulled away on the straights with ease. All that extra money could have bought any number of performance bikes that would still be faster - and there are still the suspension and weight issues on the DRZS or SM which need even more money to correct.

We love our DRZ bikes but would simply urge anyone wanting heaps of performance to consider the easy way. But if you like a challenge and a customised bike, just throw money at your DRZ and have fun.This kit replaces the stock carburetor with a true pumper carb. This will bring out the beast in the DRZ.

Kit includes a brand-new carburetor, throttle cables and a new throttle assembly which is required for the new pull-push cable system. Stock bore replacement pistons from Wiseco. You have your choice of the standard compression ratio of Solid reliability and easy installation. This manual tensioner is a good upgrade for any modified motor, especially if it is ridden hard. A new gasket is included.

You are going to need it if you work on your starter motor. It is not a good idea to re-use this gasket. If it blows out, it will dump a large amount of oil onto your right foot. Your automatic cam chain tensioner is spring loaded. This can make it difficult to install as it wants to extend before you have it bolted into place.

This handy tool will back off the cam chain tensioner mechanism and hold it for you. No more awkward 3-handed contortions are required to get the tensioner installed. What is the best/cheapest power upgrades on a DRZ400S?

The stock gearing will not wear your chain slider as quickly, but when you service the bike take an extendable inspection mirror and check the top of the swing arm for damage. I keep two extra chain sliders here as spares now. Is the James Dean jet kit is meant to be used with the 3" X 3" hole in the air box?

In other words, did they specifically tune their kit to work best with the 3 X 3 mod? I have noticed that the DRZ air filter stays really clean, and I like that. I am concerned that doing the 3 X 3 mod will introduce more dirt into the air box and cause me to have to clean the filter more.

I've read about many people pulling their hair out with the Dynojet kits. The stage one kit is a waste of time and money. With more fuel, you need more air! Yes the kit is tuned specifically to the 3x3 hole.

I'm not sure if you'll get more dirt, but it's sucking air like hell even with the snorkel on. I haven't noticed an increase of dirt in mine, but of course that would depend on conditions. The 3x3 hole does create a bit more noise, but it's not as bad as I thought it would be.
